2017 Spring Family Campout and Bear Carnival

We had a beautiful weekend for this year’s Spring Family Campout at Beaumont Scout Reservation’s Cub World!  On Saturday the bears held a Western Carnival for all to enjoy.  They barrel raced, pinned the tail on the cow, did some ropin’, sack raced, played ring toss with a cactus, and even had a couple of Cowboys bring their horses down from Nagel base for a presentation.  Thank you to everyone who participated for making this event a huge success!!!

Raptor Awareness 2017

Mike and Jade from the Wild Bird Sanctuary joined us for our February Pack Meeting and they brought a few friends: a Kestrel, a Screech Owl, a Barn Owl, a Great Horned Owl, a Falcon, an African Vulture and last but not least, Mischief the Raven.  During this hour long presentation we learn why birds of prey are important, and what we can do to ensure their continued survival - all while these very cool, very big, birds flew back and forth just inches over our heads. We also learned a few gross tidbits about each bird, like how owls barf up pellets that usually contain the bones from their last meal, vultures have pointy beaks to get at all of the good zebra rib meat, and Ravens adore eating rat tails....

I think it is safe to say that Cub Scouts and parents alike were blown away!

ARROW OF LIGHT PLAQUE INFO

Attention all WEBELOS II

Here’s details on how to make the arrow: http://www.arrow-of-light-awards.com/arrow.pdf  (see attached below)

As Dan mentions, there are metal templates in the storage locker that you can use to trace the large arrow emblem for scroll sawing.  If you can’t find them, the .PDF file has a pattern (you have to print it on three 8.5x11 pages and tape them together / cut the pattern out).

If you haven’t already, you’ll want to gather up the list of all the ranks, arrowheads and webelos pins earned for each boy, as those translate into stripes on the arrow shaft.

Attached was the listing I used for our last round.

think there were some leftover arrowheads, paint, and stain from ours that I put together in one walmart bag in the storage locker (I’ll check my basement and garage as well).

here are the totals of what we spent for arrow of light plaques:

home depot (wood, screws, dowels, stain, etc.)

65.18

auto zone (pinstripes)

8.58

hobby lobby (feathers, sinew, etc.)

16.08

black bear trading (arrowheads)

23.39

home depot (additional wood, clear coat)

20

nameplates, engraving

64

197.23

each (divide by 8)

24.65

Arrowheads are the hardest to find material on the list (you will not find them at Hobby Lobby, Michaels, or any other physical store I could find!)… I ordered them online here:

http://www.black-bear-haversack.com/index.php/arrowheads/1-1-4-to-1-1-2-agate-stone-knapped-arrowhead-points-grade-1.html

Sinew (the sticky string for lashing the arrowhead onto the shaft) and feathers I got at Hobby Lobby.

Wood for the plaque base and arrow, stain, paint, etc  – Home Depot

Here’s the contact info for the engraving shop we used (and attached is my correspondence with her):

Lastly, you are more than welcome to drop by and borrow my boys’ plaques to use as a reference – I know it helps to see a finished one while you’re working on new ones.

We spent two half-day sessions making them – first day mostly cutting the patterns with scroll saws and painting the arrow shafts; second day adding feathers, arrowheads, staining and assembling

If you’re really not sure how to go about it, let me know when you plan your first working timeslot with the parents and I’ll be glad to stop by and help you get going.
